My first reaction was to drop everything else I was doing and start sketching out a full response in article for the Energy Spirituality® Blog. Eventually I’ll publish that very full article in response to your excellent question; a detailed answer being what your excellent question deserves.

Answering your question in more detail takes a full article's worth of explaining, and why? Mostly due to an interesting kind of mess, when it comes to today’s mainstream knowledge for empaths.

* By now, Amazon.com sells 9,000 empath books. That’s good.
Only many of these writers falsely claim to teach Empath Empowerment… They stop short of using a trademark, as I can: Empath Empowerment®. But to folks who don't read as well as your typical Goodreader, that seems to be state-of-the-art knowledge. They're fooled.

* All those imitators don’t make it easy for readers to find the only books that teach real-deal Empath Empowerment®.

Guess what? I doubt you’ll find a single one of these other empath writers who teaches how to do Skilled Empath Merge. Or publishes sample articles of this kind.
