judith answers “I enjoyed this book, but the last...”

I enjoyed this book, but the last scene/epilogue confused me. Can anyone explain? I got that Nikki was reenacting the same scene Lucy did at the beginning, and that Denise was secretly watching the whole thing, so almost certainly would catch the guy, but I don't get why Nikki was allowed out of the car at the gas station and seemed to be unharmed by the guy. What did I miss?

Continuing the Everest analogy, the abductor says he hadn't been to Base Camp since Lucy & his climbing days were over, but Nikki's out trying to get herself abducted, so he can't resist picking her up & terrorizing her. He's stopped abducting though, because things were different now, with a baby on the way. (less)
