The key is to read, read, and read some more. The more you read the more you see what works in your chosen genre. The characters. The plots. The environments. You then make your own versions and can even go completely off the rails. But it's good to have a thorough understanding of the world first.
Then write! Write, write write. Don't worry about editing as you write. Simply write. Editing comes much later. Write your view of the world, whatever it is. There will definitely be readers who are interested.

For your influences you mention Tolkien, Herbert and Austen, great writers all. My question is this, the differences between them are largely apparent but what do you see as the similarities that make them collectively your influences? As a reader I like them all and can say it is simply because they all tell wonderful stories within very fleshed out worlds, but what does a writer see as a connecting thread?

Hi Lisa--I think you are on one of the FB groups I belong to---so since you write in several genres you are not of the mind that we as authors need to stick to one genre? (with sub-genres) I have several as well and am struggling with where to place my latest book! checking on Amazon the covers for 'paranormal romance' don't match my story at all!
