While I think most of the book would be accessible to teens, there are definitely some adult themes. There's a brief reference to incest and another to a miscarriage. As Judith comments below, there are also characters who have struggled with drug and alcohol dependency.

Middle school and up. It's not YA but I think a teen or preteen would enjoy it.

It's an adult, or new-adult book...the troubled kids in the story are grown- ups now, & looking back at their trauma & running away from home isn't appropriate for pre-teens/YA.
Judith Velasquez
Despite the delightful whimsy, I thought this was an adult novel. There's a fair amount of adult language and talks of people going through alcohol and drug addictions. A moan is mentioned as being pornographic when someone eats a delicious soup. Maybe older teen, or definitely adult. Highly recommend it though.
