San Francisco circa 1921 when my grandfather arrived, poor and uneducated from Russia, after fleeing the czar's anti-semitism ... did he ever meet Dorothea Lange (The Bohemians), I wonder? I would go to the building where the artists lived near Coit Tower and Little Italy and knock on each door to meet them.
