She was also afraid that if she knew he was alive and he decided to have a relationship with her, she would want to live with him and Sylvie.

I think it is possible if there was no Alice, and William had left her anyway and then married Sylvie, she may have resumed contact with her family at some point, as I am not sure she still loved William at the point they split up. (less)
