Should I read this book before all the young dudes??

Sir Brier It is a lot faster paced than All The Young Dudes (the stakes get big here starting in chapter one, vs half way through the second volume of ATYD) so if you struggle to get invested in ATYD, you should switch to this mid way through. However, ATYD established a really good base canon for Marauders which this one doesn't do as it's an AU. The characters in CR are pushed in very different ways than they are in ATYD, so they have different issues than what is "accepted" marauders canon.
ATYD says a lot more about the world and society and all of the stuff that people look for when they want a book to "move" them, and Crimson Rivers also does that but it relies more heavily on the themes already established in Hunger Games than ATYD does on the original Harry Potter series. Basically, Crimson Rivers is a very (very very very) well written novel length fan fiction, and ATYD is basically a novel in its own right. (Not meaning to imply that non-fanfics are better than fanfics, just that what I got out of these two works is different.)
tldr; I would recommend ATYD before CR, but if you get bored or are looking for something more fanficy, switch to Crimson Rivers.
