It is better if you read the Hobbit first, but... be prepared. The hobbit was geared more for the middle grades, and has a more sing songy tone. The Fellowship was geared for high school and up, and is more the epic fantasy that the movies make it out to be. Personally, I prefer the LOTR trilogy (Lord of the Rings that is) to the Hobbit, just for that fact. The Hobbit movies are better than the books, they don't have the sing song tone, and it's the epic fantasy story that everyone expects from it.
