It's more of a companion novel. The events of TFD take place 10 years prior to this book. Perry and Pauline are 6-7 years old in TFD and 16-17 in WGU.

Technically it is a sequel and if you read Firekeeper's Daughter second some things will be spoiled for you from that first book in the second. If you intend to read FD anyway I would definitely read it first!
