How do you decide what you are going to write when you start a new book?

For my Rivenloch series, when I'm in the middle of writing a book, some sibling pops up and grabs my interest, and I start jotting down notes about what might happen to them in a future book. If I'm starting a new series, I might be inspired by a news story, a historical tidbit, a life experience, or someone I meet, but it usually happens when I'm not looking for it!
