Goodreads asked Zoe M. McCarthy:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Zoe M. McCarthy I heard an agent say that it usually takes 4 completed manuscripts to learn to write. It's the 5th that finds a contract. That was true for me. For each of the 4 books before the contracted one, I received better and better rejection letters, the editors spending more time to encourage me with helpful comments and invitations to send other projects to them. I was truly learning to write. So, complete those novels in your hearts. There's a purpose for each one.
