The author's acknowledgements in the back of my version say that there is no real Alice Island. In the story it is set near Boston, MA.

The story a ferry ride from Hyannis, which wd be either Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard.

I'd have to say Nantucket, due to the sense of isolation on the island and the fact that many people seem to know each other. Martha's Vineyard has too many towns and a larger population.
