A Goodreads user asked Frances Mayes:

I travel not by plane, train, or automobile, but by book. I treasure your writing and wonder what resource/s do you use to use to choose your next pleasure read, particularly nonfiction?

Frances Mayes Well, you're like John Keats, who traveled much in "the realms of gold," meaning the gold-edged pages of his books. I travel that way, too. I don't have a particular method of choosing travel books. Often, a friend recommends a book, or I read a review. But I have so many favorites that I often reread Freya Stark, Lawrence Durrell, D.H. Lawrence, Colette, and so many others. I'm on Twitter and often find good links to contemporary travel writer there. Ondine Cohane is a reliable source. I love to dip into, over breakfast, 1000 Places To See before You Die. It just makes me realize all over again how large the world is and how short the time to see it.
