I had an idea for a setting and plot quite a while back and I jotted it down in a notebook as I do with all ideas I get. It wasn't quite germinating into anything, but when I combined it with an interesting motive I'd also jotted down a while back the rest of the plot and characters fell into place. The final book (out early 2015) doesn't really resemble the original idea at all except for the setting, but it just goes to show that even a weak idea, when left to develop, can grow into something much bigger and better.
