Wm. A.
asked:
This book got many excellent reviews in organs such some or all of NY Times, The Atlantic, The New Yorker, Harper's. I read the 1st chapter & liked it, but if I'm going to be learning fake facts, forget it. So is it the case that there is no way to tell which parts of the book are fictional? If so, I'm not only uninterested, I'm pissed. Thanks for your answer.

My guess (and it's only a guess) is that the author simply doesn't care about the truthfulness of his writing.
It seems very much like the 'hallucinations' of present-day (2023) generative AI models; they are very good at generating plausible text, but have no grasp of the veracity.
