yes and no. The story likely could be read and understood as a standalone. The book does a good job at recapping the events from the previous book...
However, I would not recommend reading it without having first read the kind worth killing. The first book is (in my opinion) the superior of the two books and you will spoil yourself for that story if you read this one first.
