A shopkeeper in Limerick, Ireland, told me the short version of an obscure legend that ties the origin of the Irish Claddagh Ring to Spanish Armada shipwreck survivors. I remember feeling enchanted by the story even back then. A week after visiting Limerick, I was aboard a ship in the Celtic Sea when Hurricane Charlie swept over Ireland, causing horrific weather with surreal waves. I don't think I'll ever forget those dark hours and if anything, they gave me a taste of what the sailors aboard the Spanish Armada must have felt like.
