How important is it to have read the previous books if I wanted to give this one a try. Are they standalone or best read in series?

Carlene O'Connor Like Vicki said, they are designed to be able to pick up any book and not feel lost. I do not repeat every detail of their personal history but you can always go back to the beginning at any time to see the developments!
Vicki Arnold The mysteries are not dependent on each other. It is nice to see the development of the protagonist's personal life through the series, but you won't be lost if you jump in with any of the books.
MMB I read this book first and was pretty lost and not invested in the characters. I started at Book 1 in the series and continued. I just re-read this title and throughly enjoyed it--much more than the first time.

For me, it helped tremendously to read the others in order because you follow the journey of these characters and grow to care about them and what happens to them. You also "get" them and their quirks, sense of humor, little sayings, etc.
