Rupert Dreyfus Nice caveat, Jason! It's always tempting to say something like: "Mr X, Mrs Y and Mr Z are fantastic authors, but I suppose my favourite author is Mr A." - just so you avoid answering a very difficult question while namedropping every author under the sun!

At least four authors came to mind pretty much straight away for very different reasons, but I would have to say my biggest influence is George Orwell (as predictable as this is). The reason is because he's the fella who turned me on to reading, I've explored his entire oeuvre, and he wrote with a conscience while maintaining a sense of humour.

I will refrain from namedropping the other three authors out of pure respect for your question! All I will say is they are very different to Orwell; they are a lot darker and a lot weirder...
