Goodreads asked Michael L. Lewis:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Michael L. Lewis One night, I had a very simple dream. A college professor at Cal Tech had returned from a visit to Chile over the Summer months where he had been studying the stars for a parallel Earth there, where the nights in the Andes are the longest and darkest of the year. The secretary of the astronomy department asked him how the trip went, and apologized to him for some of the travel problems he had experienced.

Then, I woke up. Nothing more. Nothing less. A simple dream, two characters, with few details. All morning I asked, myself, "Why would I have a dream like that?" From that moment, a plot continued to develop in my head, and after two weeks of obsession over this simple dream and the story that came out of it, I decided to write it down.
