Personal experiences do make the best writing :) ?

David Rose Given that I write - mostly - SF and Fantasy, that's kind of an odd question! However, I have to agree that there is nothing like personal experience, especially of the hard kind, to provide a solid foundation and greater depth for a writer in any genre. Even if one's experience is not the subject of the story, it does improve one's ability to relate to people and to life.
Having said that, it doesn't necessarily follow that having experience means that writing about it is necessarily going to be good writing. A recent critical review helped me by reminding me that for an author to like his characters is not the same thing as that author being able to make them engaging for the reader!
