Rita asked Katie Ruggle:

Why are publishers switching to Trade paperbacks? They are horrible! Large and expensive like hardbacks and flimsy like mass market paperbacks. Basically the disadvantages of the other two formats and none of the advantages. Hardbacks are at least durable and mass market paperbacks fit in your pocket and your budget.

Katie Ruggle Hi Rita! For some reason, trade is what’s selling right now. I noticed at my local bookstore that the romance section was only trade paperbacks—no handy mass-market size to be seen (granted, it’s a smallish store with a proportionally smallish romance section). These trends are circular, though, so hang in there—I bet mass-market (or something similar in size) will return to popularity sooner than later. Until then, we’ll need really big pockets.
