The ring is meant to incriminate Dan, but why would he keep the only real evidence against him & where has it been? Miranda & the cops had both searched through the jewelry & didn't find the ring, so how did it just appear in the jewelry box at the end?

I do think this is an excellent question.
It seems like Dan would have ditched Jane's ring. He certainly wouldn't be sentimental about it after killing Jane. I guess we have to just accept that he did keep it in his jewelery box so that we get the surprise right along with Miranda that her father really did kill her mother all those years ago.
