Emmy asked M.L. Rio:

This question contains spoilers… (view spoiler)

M.L. Rio In this book as, I think, in life, there isn't one open-and-shut explanation for why people do what they do. Our impulse to find an "origin story" for every character which neatly explains or justifies their actions goes against my experience of human beings, so I tend to craft characters who are more believably ambiguous. As for Richard's motives, they're there, if not exactly floating on the surface (pun intended). I would encourage you to think about demographics and patterns of socialization which have shaped his conception of himself and how he reacts to any event which doesn't conform to or support that narrative.

I realize this is an annoying answer, but it's also the most honest one.
