Goodreads asked Sterling Carmichael:

How do you get inspired to write?

Sterling Carmichael Ideas for inspiration pop into my head all the time. I try to note them for future reference, otherwise, they may get wiped from my memory indefinitely. Though admittedly more of a pantser than a plotter, I do have tons of notes for ideas and plot points - I just don't know everything, or what all the story and details will end up being until I really get going on the writing.
If the idea fits the mood and style of the overall work, I move it up the queue in my 'ideas' list. Then when the moment is right, I try incorporating it in an appropriate place in the book, tinkering (often heavily) with the results until it shines. If it ends up working, I keep it in, and if it doesn't, I toss it or move it into a 'maybe' pile, noting what did and did not work for the future.
