AFMasten asked Jo Walton:

I was swept into your fold through the Small Change books. And as I read on, I'm wondering how an author (yourself) can move so easily from alternate history to other sorts of speculative fiction. Is Sylvia's story (Or What You Will) answering that question (perhaps not question, but observation)?

Jo Walton If I identify with anyone in OWYW it isn't Sylvia. But you're not wrong, because the discussion of creativity in that book is certainly coming out of ways I think about creativity, I think the answer to why I move from one form of speculative fiction to another is that I like speculative fiction, I am interested in genre as a thing, and I like trying different things. I get bored trying to do the same thing over and over.
