1) What secret did Eva Braun tell Magda?
2) Were you aware there were women hired as tasters of Hitler’s food and beverages in order to protect him from potential poisoning?
3) How many of the Germans knew of the atrocities happening?
4) Was there anything the average German could do to stop what was happening?
5) How many of the Germans went along and how many embraced the ideology with fervor? Were they all actively complicit or did they truly not see the truth of what was happening?
6) How far would you go to survive?
7) At the end, has the novel given you a new perspective on the war?
8) Were your suspicions about how Hitler truly died be confirmed at the end of the book?
9) Would you somehow sympathize with an evil regime while reading?
10) There are so many extreme events here — the bombing of Berlin, the death of Magda’s parents at two different times nonetheless, falling in love with Karl, Karl’s death and ultimate resurrection, Magda’s time in the concentration camp, Ursula’s death by poisoning, the Russians raping Magda and her three friends. How is ALL of that treated with such a blasé attitude?
11) What can one person do to stop a madman?
12) Can you imagine your job is to taste Hitler’s food before he eats it because he is paranoid about being poisoned?
