The first book of the Memoirs of Lady Trent is set in a country that seems to be based on Romania. Have you visited Romania for research? And, if so, what did you like best about Romania and what surprised you the most about it?

Good catch! A lot of readers gloss Vystrana as Russia, but that's Bulskevo, the country that kind of rules over them (hence the boyar); Vystrana itself is indeed loosely based on Romania. I've never had the pleasure of visiting, though, which is a pity. Those details were based on research reading and the assistance of a fan whose wife is Romanian.

I have just finished re-reading the Onyx Court series - its detail makes it a fabulous series to read over and over! I've also been reading Peter Ackroyd at the same time and I was wondering if you'd ever read his "London: a Biography" and what you thought of it? Its themes really reminded me of the Onyx Court books.
