How do you come up with a good structure for your books? (Specifically the openings) I'm trying to write about similar topics like Wintergirls and Speak but I'm finding it hard to keep a good structure and write a good opening.

Laurie Halse Anderson I don't worry about the opening until I've written a couple of drafts of the entire book. I need to really understand the story deeply in order to craft the right opening. The only way I can get to that deep level of understanding is to write the whole thing.
