Susan I listened to the audio version of this book and there was an author commentary at the end that discussed that there are different versions of this story and how can change with each re-telling and in each culture.
The father finds the story the son was looking for and it was about a family with many boys - not many cats and I think it added to the author's comment about who re-writes history and culture.

I think Calvin's answer is a great one so this is not to take anything away
from that one.
