I was imagining how a real-life manned Mars mission could work, and how they would deal with any problems that cropped up. As I thought of more and more possible problems, I realized it would make for a good story.
My main inspiration to continue was my core readership. I was posting it as a serial to my website, one chapter at a time. Reader feedback and emails really motivated me to press on.

Hey man. I listened to The Martian as an audiobook, and was wondering if you have had any contact with R.C. Bray? Did you chose him to narrate it (because he did an amazing job, in my opinion) and what did you think of it (if you have listened to it yourself?) Loved the book, I hope to see more like it in the future!
