Why does the main character in Shadow Woman always fight scratching her neck? It seems like a character tag, but I don't understand what it means. It is so distracting that I'm having trouble concentrating on the story.

It's a way that she feels uneasy--some people have goosebumps, some flush red, some stutter. It's her body telling her something is very wrong.
