Goodreads asked Sandra Thom-Jones:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Sandra Thom-Jones When I received my autism diagnosis it was a huge relief. I joined online groups and I read everything I could find on autism in adults (and autism in women). I read lots of memoirs, which were really insightful and engaging but left me with lots of ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions. As an autism researcher working in a university, I read lots of academic journal articles, which provided detailed scientific information but didn’t connect to my lived experience. I wanted a book that described different aspects of what it is like to be autistic, explaining the characteristics referred to in the literature but in a way that was more human and made sense to me as an autistic person. Then my son’s psychologist said to me “you should write one”…. It took me a couple of years, but I eventually wrote the book I wanted to read when I was diagnosed, and I really hope it fills that gap for other autistic people.
