Dawn
Dawn asked Angel Martinez:

Do you have any advice for new writers?

Angel Martinez Hi Dawn! Where to start? I think all of what I could tell you amounts to the same thing - don't write in a vacuum. There are writer communities galore out there - utilize them. Some specifics?
*Never labor under the impression that you can edit your own work. You can't. No one can.
*If possible, grab a mentor. Ideally someone local for you to talk face to face. Someone who knows the landscape and has already made most of the common mistakes can help you avoid them.
*Write. Dear gods above and below - write! You must finish the stuff you start and the only way to get better is to write more. Know your craft. Read your chosen genre. Understand what works for you as a reader and what does not.
*Submit carefully. Research your markets. Don't dismiss small presses and self-publishing, but don't rush into anything. All small presses are not equal and self-publishing is not for everyone.
*Write what you know? Pfffffft. No. Write what you love. Research thoroughly when you must.
