Tom Thornton I think the universally estimated answer is Chile, largely because the author is Chilean. But I think it was intended to be a fictional South American country, because the political history doesn't directly match any real country in that region (it just takes elements of many)
Rudy Lopez The Sacramento in the book is fictional. Allende uses this device to allow her the freedom to tweak the place to suit her narrative.
Arta Curtis There is a Colonia del Sacramento in southwestern Uruguay. It faces Buenos Aires, Argentina. Although the author never says what country the story takes place in, this would be a good guess.
