Gabi
Gabi asked Michelle Hodkin:

Where did your inspiration for Noah come from, and how did you end up choosing the names for both him and Mara?

Michelle Hodkin I’ve loved the name Mara since I heard it used in a not-particularly-good ’90s movie. It has some interesting meanings, one of which is ’bitterness’ in Hebrew, which was just right for her. Noah is also a name I’ve always loved, and the meaning in Hebrew (rest, comfort) fits the Mara/Noah relationship dynamic incredibly well.

The last name 'Dyer' was originally intended to be Noah's, as an homage to Troy Dyer, my favorite fictional male character from the movie Reality Bites. But it just didn't sound right or feel right for him, so Mara got it instead.
