Goodreads asked Beate Triantafilidis:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Beate Triantafilidis I wrote 'Bird Hits Glass' while recovering from chronic illness myself. Writing the novel allowed me to explore through fiction topics that I personally also wrestled with at the time, like loneliness and connection, loss of identity and new dynamics in relationships.

I was most interested in exploring the social implications of chronic illness and long-term isolation, and use the lens of illness to dive into the millennial themes of self-realisation, identity, loneliness and social media from a new angle.

With this novel, I wanted the marginalised, and often invisible, community of people with chronic illnesses, and their friends and family, to see their experiences reflected in fiction - and now that community is bigger than ever with millions of people experiencing long covid.
