Dear Josh. Sam is quite jealous of Sipka, the reporter, and Alexander, the art teacher. I wonder if he is also jealous when it comes to Ethan. Sam's preference is for sensitive and beautiful young men, but can't you think that he actually has a complex about his own appearance as a strong man? P.S. Ono, are you from Yoko Ono? I was surprised because it was a Japanese surname.

Hi Azu! This is an interesting question. You're right that Sam was a little jealous of Jason's relationship with Sipka and the potential for a relationship with Alexander. However, he's not jealous OF them, and I think that's a crucial difference. I don't believe Sam would be insecure about his looks--in fact, although he has a "type," I don't think looks are important to him overall. He's meticulous and fastidious about his own appearance, but I feel like that isn't vanity so much as his perfectionism.
His unease regarding Sipka and Alexander might have to do with his job, which is centered on human frailty and fallibility. But also perhaps his relationship with Ethan. Ethan was young and probably more prone to playing games in an effort to get Sam's attention. I think the relationship with Ethan was problematic in a couple of ways, which is one reason Sam felt so guilty after Ethan's death.
I chose the name Ono because it came up as a possibility when I was searching for popular Japanese surnames, but I'm sure there was some name brand recognition there. ;-) Senator Ono's character was based VERY loosely on Senator S. I. Hayakawa.
