Though it could be read as a standalone, in my opinion I think it serves more as a beginning plot, world and character building story to lead to greater climaxes in the following books to come out. The main plot can arguably be said to be concluded here. Yet, this is just book one of a trilogy! AKA hints at the next instalment at the end of the book and threads left untied.
