“Humans. For the most part, you are dull and blundering. But occasionally, you can be remarkably bright creatures.”
It turns out that I am a sucker for a Giant Pacific Octopus named Marcellus McSquibbles. Thank you, Shelby Van Pelt, for your debut novel entitled, “Remarkably Bright Creatures.” If you enjoyed watching “Flipper” on T.V. or “Free Willy” at the movie theater look no farther than this book. And even though the idea that an octopus may crack a cold case might seem a bit corny, I can guarantee that you’ll bask in this novel’s warmth and wit much more than you’ll cringe at its whimsy.
The author’s fun-to-follow prose engages at every turn and as a reader you will find yourself rooting for the many characters, hoping that they will find whatever it is they seek; answers to mysteries, family, and joy. Each character is profoundly human, with flaws and eccentricities crafted with care. But what makes Van Pelt’s novel most charming and joyful is the tender friendship between species, and the ways Tova and Marcellus make each other ever more remarkable and brighter.
This book is a perfect choice for an intelligent beach read. I’m so glad I read this refreshing story, and you are likely to feel the same way. I give it 5 stars.
Amy Not really , although it does involve a love of the sea, and awareness it can bring death too. But it does make you even more curious and respectful of the octopus.
Bernie No. I is a novel with several peopler-threads that come together at the end, but , IMO, the star is Marcellus. I ridiculously bright octopus who is [for me] the real center of the story
Marguerita The book was evocative of the documentary for me. It reveals the intelligence and friendly (?) nature of the mysterious sea creature toward the diver who was in need of emotional healing. It also reminded me of the similar scenario in the movie "The Color of Water".
Joan Only in that it shows how smart octopi really are.
Allison It provided another reminder that octopus will never be on my dinner table!
Barbara No.
And there is no betrayal of the friendship as there was in the film.
