Part of the story behind my book was influenced by the time I spent growing up in Plymouth, Devon. At that time the city had been completely rebuilt and boasted a brand new shopping centre. The main target of the war-time bombing had been Devonport Dockyard. The situation in war-torn Poland played a significant part of the story too, as did the subsequent movement of children from Europe to the Lake District shortly after the War.
