Goodreads asked James Harris:

How do you deal with writer’s block?

James Harris For me, writer's block is a fear of getting it wrong, a fear of writing something rubbish. It's a fear that comes when you forget that you're supposed to get it wrong, and the first draft is supposed to be rubbish.

So to deal with it I tell myself to write the absolute worst version of a scene, or a chapter, or in some cases, a book. It's very liberating! And once the rubbish version is written, I can get on with the joyful task of rewriting it a gazillion times until it's actually OK.
