Natalie M asked John Grisham:

Question from my Year 12 students: we are struggling to find the best way to start our short stories- would you recommend beginning with the characters or the setting or knowing the story arc? Any advice or help would be appreciated (Year 12’s, Saint Stephen’s College, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia)

John Grisham One of my rules for writing popular fiction is: Do not write the first scene until you know the last scene. Outline the story, long or short! If you know the ending it’s hard to get lost and makes the rest of the story easier to see.
