Mrs. Read asked:

Considerable emphasis placed on code message very near book’s end, but I found neither its interpretation nor significance later in the book. What did I miss?

Sandi The code message from John Smith was written in Japanese variety of "morse code" which Sasha had taught Joe by tapping long and short on his wrist. When he realized that's what it was he could decipher the message. Then at the very end when he is too frozen to speak they communicate using it underwater in the hot spring. I dont think we learn exactly what they are saying but I think it has to be "I love you".
