The likelihood was that Mungo would be destroyed by Hamish and life on the ‘scheme’ (housing estate), but there was always the chance that James would recover enough to cart Mungo off to Ardnamurchan, the paradise James had once discovered. There’s enough in Shuggie Bain, Young Mungo and in the author's own life story to suggest that he believes happy endings are possible, and that gay people deserve them as much as others.(less)
