It is not a sequel! It is described by the author as a companion novel. Both can be read completely on their own and make complete sense. Some of the characters in Candy House are briefly mentioned in Goon Squad but if you haven't read Goon Squad, the characters still stand on their own and make sense within the world of Candy House.

It’s definitely a sequel. You could probably read it on its own, but the characters and their backstories are spread out across both novels!

I read Goon Squad, but so long ago that there was very little memory of it (I don't retain plot details), and thoroughly enjoyed The Candy House anyway.

Honestly, marketing aside, this is a sequel, loosely defined. Without having read Goon Squad, you won’t be lost but you will loose important context for some of the characters.
