Lisiewiczka asked this question about Dune (Dune, #1):
Is this book hard to read for someone to whom english is not the first language? I consume lots of content in english on daily basis, I can watch movies and tv series and understand everything, but I'm wondering if I will be able to get through this specific book. Especially that many readers describe Dune as overwhelming. Thoguhts? It'd be best if some Poles tried it and could share their experience ;)

(it has a relationship with time that makes you feel like a spectator of events past, it'll also just straight up reveal important plot points via "historical documents" before they happen in the actual narrative). Many of the events and motivations are politically driven, and so may be difficult for someone to follow who is not a native speaker coming into the story cold. But having a basic understanding of the events before tackling the book, may make it easier to get the full experience. I knew I had to pick it up after watching the David Lynch film, the film was interesting.. but hinted at a much much deeper experience that a film just can't portray. The Denis Villeneuve film that just came out last year hits it even closer, but it is still not quite the same experience as far as richness. (less)
