I'm so curious to know the backstory of how you came up with the title for "Swimming lessons"?

Claire Fuller Actually, I wanted the book to be called something like (I've forgotten it exactly) - Thursday afternoon about three fifteen pm. But everyone (editor, agent) etc said that wouldn't work. It was too long and no one would remember it. My foreign rights agent came up with Swimming Lessons and it just seemed to work.

I just finished Our Endless Numbered Days...it was beautifully written. It's dark, but when it's written from Peggy's innocent, brainwashed point-of-view, it is almost sweet. I found myself reading between the lines. Coming from the psychological POV of an 8-15 year old whose sole source of survival is her own father...did you intend her inventing Reuben as a way to cope with the sexual abuse from her father?
