Goodreads asked Amanda Daire:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Amanda Daire I knew I wanted to write about women who had become estranged from their family members, particularly because I had been struggling to come to terms with emotions surrounding my own estrangement (different from the book, but similar emotions.) One day I was driving and started imagining what it would be like to have one public image (bubbly preschool teacher) and a secret life at night (struggling alcoholic who lies about her relationship with her daughter, whom she's been secretly estranged from for five years.) I wanted the mother and daughter to have different views of what went wrong in their relationship, but I wanted them to both be sympathetic characters despite their negative emotions. As I was plotting, my main character's mother, whom she had been estranged from for twenty years, popped up and let me know she'd like her story told, too. I loved the idea of helping these characters to heal these multigenerational wounds, and I hope you'll enjoy the journey of reading along as they attempt to do just that! :)
