Goodreads asked Joanna Kadish:

What mystery in your own life could be a plot for a book?

Joanna Kadish why do I often sabotage myself? I ask myself that a lot. One example of my difficulty in academic or corporate situations: I had a hard time making friends with professors when I went back to school briefly several years ago, and was threatened with probation by one of the teachers. Somehow I made it though the process, and got my diploma. And then I realized my oldest brother did the same thing to himself, getting in a fight with his mentor at a prestigious university where he was a PhD candidate. But unlike me, he held his ground, and got fired from his teaching post because he didn't make amends. His mentor was famous and had a lot of pull. I don't know what my brother did after that, he went dark. In my case, I capitulated when I realized that the teacher was going to win, and if I worked it, I wouldn't be eviscerated. Perhaps I could make nice and live to see another day.
